Inspired By Nature: Creative Writing with Hannah Tinti

Five Tuesdays: February 25, 2014 - March 25, 2014

1867-Items in Roosevelt Museum

“That seal filled me with every possible feeling of romance and adventure,” Roosevelt would write in his autobiography. He pursued that feeling by expanding his museum, collecting animal skeletons, tadpoles, minerals, bird nests and insects, housing the specimens in his boyhood bedroom.

This five-session creative writing class at the Museum, taught by noted author Hannah Tinti, will focus on the natural world, with each session held in a different gallery. We will read excerpts from Theodore Roosevelt’s notebooks and those of other great nature writers, and draw on the exhibits for on-site writing exercises and prompts. Grounding each student in the basics of nature writing, the instructor will also provide tips on description, structure, research, setting, and theme to complete their own writing projects. Open to beginners, as well as any writer looking to take their work to the next level.
