Science Barge

Meet us in Yonkers at the only greenhouse floating on the Hudson River!

The Science Barge is a prototype, sustainable urban farm and environmental education center. Floating on the Hudson River, the greenhouse there grows an abundance of fresh produce including tomatoes, melons, greens, and lettuce with zero net-carbon emissions, zero pesticides, and zero runoff. All of the energy needed to power the Barge is generated by solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels while the hydroponic greenhouse is irrigated solely by collected rainwater and purified river water, thus operating completely “off the grid.” Docked in downtown Yonkers just north of the Yonkers Pier, it is the only fully functioning demonstration of renewable energy supporting sustainable food production in New York.

The Science Barge staff will take us on a tour of their impressive facility; teach us about renewable energy sources and sustainable food production with interactive workshops and demonstrations.

This tour will meet at the Science Barge. Directions will be sent in confirmation email before the tour. Recommended for children 6 and older.
