Stratovolcano

The young stratovolcano, Kolombangara.  At least six of the many bird species inhabiting the elfin cloud forests of the crater rim are found there and nowhere else on Earth.

From the Cocos Island off the coast of Costa Rica to the famed Galapagos, oceanic islands foster a vast array of cultures, wondrous biodiversity, and diverse environments. Here, we explore what scientists have learned about island species with a focus on current island discovery, adventure, and cutting-edge science. Experience hands-on activities, scientist talks and a live animal encounter with Zoologist and naturalist Jarod Miller.

What's Happening:  

11 am–4 pm | Exploration Stations

11 am–4 pm | Message in a Bottle installation by artist Asher Jay.

Noon and 3 pm | Experience a live-animal encounter with zoologist and naturalist Jarod Miller

1 pm | Meet the Experts-Join scientists Jenny Newell, Christopher Filardi, and Chris Meyer as they discuss island species with a focus on current discoveries, island adventures, and cutting-edge science. Followed by an audience Q&A.

A new film about the work of Museum scientists on South Pacific coral reefs, Reefs Illuminated premieres during the Milstein Science Series: Island Life program at 11 am, and will run continuously until 4 pm. (The film will also run during Museum hours from Monday, April 15, through Friday, May 3.)
