The concept of “small talk” has taken on a new meaning since molecular biologist Bonnie Bassler began investigating the microscopic world of bacteria. Bassler researches a process called quorum sensing, in which bacteria communicate with one another to coordinate their behavior, even to mount attacks on higher organisms, including humans.
