Without water, life as we know it would not exist. The first living organisms on Earth appeared in the ocean nearly four billion years ago. Some, including our ancestors, adapted to life on land. But the ocean is still home to more kinds of life than anywhere else on the planet.
Take a ride through our solar system to gain a new perspective on our home planet and splash down into the deep oceans to explore the variety of life underwater.
More than 70 percent of our planet’s surface is covered by water, and our atmosphere is rich in water vapor that condenses into visible clouds. We also live on the only planet in the solar system known to harbor life.
Created with the same techniques as those used to produce Space Shows for the Hayden Planetarium, this original immersive film mixes science visualization and high-resolution video to carry viewers on a journey from the outer solar system into the deep ocean waters of our planet to explore the rich diversity of marine life on Earth.
Underwater footage for this production was shot on location in Indonesia, off the Derawan islands in East Kalimantan and in the province of Southeast Sulawesi.
