Petra's extraordinary monuments were indeed "lost" to Westerners for over 500 years, but the site has been continuously inhabited since the fourth century B.C.E. Desert traders called the Nabataeans settled in an arid valley in present-day Jordan and turned it into a fertile oasis, a sculptural masterpiece, and a center of world trade.

This Special Collection introduces the historical, technological, and cultural crosscurrents that combined to create a civilization that thrived in peace for over a thousand years. Resources include a guide to the Petra: Lost City of Stone exhibition and additional activities for your home or classroom.
