Dynamic Planet El Niño

Why is predicting El Niño important?

Play the El Niño Game

Many people depend on knowing if the climate will change. Predicting if El Niño will happen isn’t easy because it is very complicated. Scientists are only beginning to understand the relationships among the different conditions that signal an El Niņo.

To measure and predict climate in the Pacific, oceanographers use a number of tools, including:

Buoy

a network of buoys Satellite
(“Boo-eez”) that measure ocean temperature, currents, and winds near the Equator. Every day, buoys send information to satellites.

research ships
that measure ocean temperature, currents, winds, and clouds.

computers
that model ocean and atmosphere behavior to help scientists predict if an El Niño will happen.
