Plate Tectonics
This session explores how convection of the Earth's mantle causes rocky plates to move across the planet's surface. We will spend time in the Hall of Planet Earth and the Hall of the Universe.
Objectives for the day:
- To enhance your understanding of the convection of solid rock in the Earth's mantle, the history of plate movement, and how plate tectonics cause ocean basins, mountains, and continents to form.
- To explore plate tectonic concepts according to developmental appropriateness across all grade levels.
- To reflect on the challenges of understanding geologic time, plate tectonics, and Earth history.
- To learn strategies that promote student understanding of plate tectonics.
- To engage, share, and reflect with colleagues on science teaching and student learning.
