About the Objects

|
The objects assembled here typify many of the remains from Chalcolithic society. The establishment of formal burial grounds, separated from dwelling areas, occurred during this period. Secondary burial was a common custom. After the dead body disintegrated, the bones were placed in ceramic ossuaries, many of which are remarkable for their superb craftsmanship.
Unlike the personal items made of perishable materials found in the Cave of the Warrior, typical offerings found in Chalcolithic burials include pottery bowls and vessels, shells, beads, mother-of-pearl pendants, flint tools, and metal objects. The number and quality of items in a grave point to differences in rank. Special objects, such as standards and incense burners, are thought to have been made for ceremonial purposes and mortuary rites.
