Human immunodeficiency virus, or
HIV (Retroviridae), works by targeting and then inhabiting the immune
cellswhite blood cells called T lymphocyte
cellsof the person it infects. To reproduce, HIV must change the
form of its genetic material from RNA to DNA. In the process, HIV often
mutates genetically, so the already weakened immune system has an even
harder time identifying and resisting its enemy.
