The Genetics of Disease
The newest methods of preventing and curing infectious disease depend on deciphering the genetic code of microbes. Each species and strain of microbe has a unique gene sequence, something like a fingerprint. Using this sequence, researchers can detect a microbe's presence and thus diagnose a disease. Gene sequences also help scientists learn how microbes cause disease.
