Palatal openings in the roof of the mouth evolved in the common ancestor of all
sauropsids. Sauropsids, a group
consisting of turtles, lizards, snakes, crocodiles, and dinosaurs (including birds), have a
number of advanced features,
inherited from a common ancestor. While we know that blood vessels and nerves go through
the palatal openings, the
overall function of the openings is not clear.
