Mongolia
Now: Independent Voices
Monday-Sunday, May 22-28, 2000
Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, 2000
Award-winning
performers and artists from Mongolia present a variety of
programs that celebrate their nomadic heritage, the revival
of their traditional dress, their religion, and their customs
as well as the arts and sports featured at festivals. Presentations
include champion archers, wrestlers, and a marksman; singers,
dancers, and musicians; an artful contortionist; and an
expert felt maker, all featuring the rich history of Mongolia
and its dynamic present-day life. Additionally, the program
includes a special film series focusing on the "new" Mongolia.
Films and videos examine national historical themes, explore
questions of religion, and capture the complexities of a
society in transition to democracy. Several filmmakers journey
to the Museum to present the New York premieres of their
work.
