Toxic Culprit of the Chesapeake
Investigators in Maryland used DNA analysis to solve a murky marine mystery. A type of algae called Pfiesteria piscicida causes fish die-offs in the Chesapeake Bayand can also result in severe illness, including temporary brain dysfunction, for local fishermen and lab workers. Using techniques similar to DNA fingerprinting, researchers identified the DNA "signature" sequence for the species. A quick water test now enables health officials to detect when Pfiesteria is present in large quantities, or "blooming," and temporarily close waterways to keep people safe.
