MOSSES AND ALLIES
"The mosses, liverworts, and hornworts are relatively
small plants, many less than 2 cm long and most less than 20.
When clumped together, they can be conspicuous components of
forest and other habitats. Traditionally these three divisions
have been grouped together as the bryophytes. Recent research
has confirmed, however, that they are quite distinct, especially
the hornworts. Although they are often abundant in relatively
moist areas all over the world, many can remain alive for years
in a dry condition, recovering quickly if moistened."
