As the primary male element, fire, or agni, is essential to almost all Hindu rituals. The flame symbolizes the kindling of one's devotion in reaching out to the Divine; the lamp that holds a flame during puja embodies the feminine element. For the duration of a puja, worshippers burn ghee, clarified butter oil, in a lamp that stands in a specific spot during the ritual. Waving a lamp of burning camphor in front of an icon at the end of worship represents the symbiotic meeting of God and worshippers.
