A surgeon and a Jain, Dr. Navin Mehta has installed a shrine in a bookshelf wall unit in his office on Manhattan's Second Avenue.

"I burn incense, stand with my hands together, close my eyes and recite one of the nine lines of Jain prayer. It's known as the Navkar Mantra. Afterwards, I feel totally relaxed and totally peaceful. When you pray, you don't ask for anything in return. You just say, 'I am going to be just like you.' Jain means anybody, any human being, can be God. You are not asking to be, but you are asking that you should do some of the things that the Jains are meant to do in daily life."
