An underlying tenet of Hinduism is the notion of karma—every action creates an equal reaction. One way to balance out negative karma created by past mistakes is through the fulfillment of a specific vow, or vrata, to the Divine.

Slowly Enacting Vows

A vow is a personal choice that does not require the services of a priest. Feminine strength is revered in India, and it is women who most often make vows. Believed to be much stronger in nature than men, women bear the responsibility of keeping the karmic balance of the household. The goal is to lessen the burden of the family's bad karma. Simple or complex, a vow is a serious commitment to the Divine and must be enacted exactly as it was promised. Stories abound of dishonored vows and the Divine revenge that followed.
