Coral Reef

Andros Island Barrier Reef

Off Andros Island in the Caribbean, corals form the Andros Reef, one of the largest barrier reefs in the world. Andros is created by colonies of small, soft-bodied coral polyps whose hard skeletons form much of the structure of a reef.

The exhibit shows the Andros Reef in the 1930s. Today, Andros and most other reefs around the world are threatened or endangered. Many reefs are already dead or severely damaged from runoff pollutants, over-fishing, and rising water temperatures.
