Tools and utensils

  • Exhibition Text

    • Most of the tools displayed here were used for working in bark and wood, the two principal raw materials of the Coast Salish. Bark shredders and the D-shaped adzes, such as those in this case, were common everywhere on the Northwest Coast. The pile driver was an important tool. It was used in the construction of weirs and traps for catching fish, the basic food of all the Northwest Coast tribes. The pile driver at the bottom of the case weighs thirteen pounds.
