Ceremonial clothing

  • Exhibition Text

    • Most of the clothing and some of the ornaments displayed here were for ceremonies. The most prized garments were those made of Chilkat blankets. These were worn only on special occasions with leggings, an apron, and a headdress. Everyday clothing, less elaborate for both men and women, consisted of an apron, a robe of skins or cedar bark, an in cold weather and as protection from a rain spruce root or cedarbark hat. Both men and women wore ear pendants; men wore nose pins; and women wore a lip ornament. Sharks’ teeth, abalone shell, and silver were popular materials for ornaments and were traded through the Northwest Coast culture area.
