In May, 1903, Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir camped for three nights in Yosemite Valley, California, depicted here. It was the beginning of a friendship and frequent collaboration in the cause of conservation. 

On the trip, Muir, founder of the Sierra Club, hoped he "might be able to do some forest good talking freely around the camp-fire." He was a strong proponent of making Yosemite Valley and the Mariposa Grove of giant sequoias part of the existing Yosemite National Park. In 1906, Roosevelt did just that.
