The Red Sea
The Red Sea, shown here in a satellite image, has been widening for the last 20 million years, as the African plate breaks away from the Arabian plate. Although it is only 300 kilometers wide, the Red Sea reaches a depth of 3,500 meters. Geologically, it is an ocean because part of its floor is made of oceanic crust.
