Guided Exploration: Universe Zone
Overview: The universe is all the matter and space in existence. This zone explores the expansion of the universe and the limits of observation. Topics include the universality of physical laws, the Big Bang and the evidence for it, and how redshifted light provides evidence for the expansion of the universe.
1. Universe Wall
Explore how our universe is changing, how gravity has shaped it, and how scientists use light to measure distance. What is the observable universe, and why is our view of it limited? What is the cosmic microwave background?
The universe is all the matter, energy, and space that exist. We can observe only a part of it - the observable universe.
All parts of the universe are subject to the same simple laws of nature that we find here on Earth.
The Big Bang is the scientific description of the origin of the cosmos.
Galaxies form and evolve within an expanding and cooling universe. Because light takes billions of years to cross the cosmos, we see distant galaxies as they were at earlier times.
When we look out into space, we also look back into time.
