Theodore Roosevelt Park and Obelisk

Theodore Roosevelt Park and Obelisk

The wooded grounds surrounding the Museum, originally known as Manhattan Square were renamed Theodore Roosevelt Park in 1958 on 100th anniversary of his birth.

There is an obelisk in the park inscribed with the names of American Nobel Prize winners, starting with Roosevelt's prize for peace in 1906. Just west of the entrance to the Rose Center for Earth and Space on 81st Street is the Bull Moose Dog Run, a nod to the Bull Moose or Progressive Party for which TR ran for president in 1912.
