Horizontal Compass Dial (Brass)
Bronze, enamel, glass, iron
Late 19th century, China
As with the dial at left, the hours here are marked on an arc, but this dial uses a string rather than a pin to cast the shadow. In Chinese instruments, the compass is arranged for the needle to point south instead of north, European style. The ornamental upright piece folds down for convenient carrying.
