      19th century, China

For use at different latitudes, rotating the dial’s vertical wheel changes the angle of the upper plate marked with hours. The shadow-casting pin must always point toward the celestial pole. Characters written on the wheel may relate to phases of the moon, the calendar or the zodiac.
