    • While one type of armillary long helped astronomers determine star positions and keep track of time, the armillary sphere functions as a teaching instrument. Some show the great circles of the celestial sphere, others the positions of the Sun and planets, especially the Earth. Another teaching device, the celestial globe, illustrates the pattern of the stars in the night sky.
