Anchor Ice
Blankets of ice crystallize along the sea floor, anchoring to stationary objects and marine life at depths down to 33 meters (108 feet). Over time the ice becomes thick and buoyant enough to break free and float toward the surface-often carrying with it sea stars, sea urchins, worms and other animals imprisoned in its icy clutch. Anchor ice then joins the underside of the ice covering the ocean surface, leaving its captives exposed to predators.
