Petra: Lost City of Stone
THE PEOPLE OF PETRA

Youthful male head
Limestone
Khirbet et-Tannur, Jordan
2nd century AD

The precise identity of this sculpted youthful head is unclear. The deeply carved eyes gives it an intense, sober expression, emphasized by the down-turned mouth. The ears have drill holes, probably used for jewelry, and wavy locks arranged in neatly manicured rows, which may reflect Nabataean fashion.
