Bird Masquerade
with Big Tail --
"Piko Piko Come and Hug Me"
Steel, wood, feathers, paint,
palm-stem brooms. 1995
Lent by private collection, London
|
The intricate openwork in this
sculpture suggests the complex
basketry of storage vessels, fish-drying racks and fish traps that are part of daily life in the Niger delta. The
sub-title, "Piko piko come and hug me" suggests the masquerader's display
of sexual prowess with the water
bird's tail moving like a phallus. This
sculpture is directly based on one
of the players in the Okolukurukuru ensemble.
