Silver & turquoise bracelet
The American Museum of Natural History has opened Totems to Turquoise: The Shop in conjunction with Totems to Turquoise: Native North American Jewelry Arts of the Northwest and Southwest, a landmark exhibition of more than 500 pieces of dazzling contemporary and historic Native North American jewelry that celebrates the beauty, power, and symbolism of this magnificent tradition. Totems to Turquoise: The Shop offers one of the finest collections anywhere of authentic Native North American jewelry and wearable art for purchase and will be open during the run of the exhibition from October 30, 2004, through July 10, 2005.
Over the past year, the Museum retail staff visited artists in their studios in Arizona and New Mexico in the Southwest and Washington and British Columbia in the Northwest to assemble a stunning collection of unique pins, earrings, necklaces, pendants, bracelets, and rings, as well as belts, bags, scarves, and artfully designed Zuni, Acoma, Hopi, and Navajo pottery.

"We are offering an exciting range of the finest and most superbly designed jewelry and other artwork by contemporary artists," said Katherine Adler, Director of Retail at the Museum. "Renowned Navajo artists Kee Yazzie, Jr.; Sammie Begay; Darryl Begay; and Mary and Anthony Lovato have created exquisite jewelry in turquoise, shell, and sterling silver. Haida artist Derek White has contributed a variety of sterling silver pendants in nature motifs. Dorothy Grant has designed fashionable clothes in bold patterns-and these are just a few examples of the assortment of dazzling objects by truly gifted artists whose gorgeous work can be purchased in our striking new shop."
