Companion Publication

The richly illustrated, authoritative book, Totems to Turquoise: Native North American Jewelry Arts of the Northwest and Southwest, celebrates the relationship between the beauty of art and the sanctity of tradition. Published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., in association with the American Museum of Natural History, the 224-page book was coedited by Peter M. Whiteley, Curator of North American Ethnology in the Museum's Division of Anthropology; Lois Sherr Dubin, lecturer, curator, and author of several authoritative books on Native American jewelry; and Kari Chalker, an anthropological writer, researcher, and editor.

Totems to Turquoise has 185 illustrations, including 150 in full color. Native artists of the Northwest and Southwest discuss their work, techniques, and inspiration alongside images of their exquisite pieces and insightful essays from authorities such as Ms. Dubin and Dr. Whiteley. The jewelry displayed on these pages shows a full range of Native North American artistic styles and also showcases the similarities between the vastly different lands of the Northwest and Southwest. The book is available in both the Museum Shop and the new Totems to Turquoise: The Shop, in softcover for $27.95 and hardcover for $45.00.
