Buddhist Art at Asia Society and Museum
 | Montien Boonma: Temple of the Mind
Through May 11
The first U.S. retrospective of the art of Montien Boonma (1953-2000), a
distinguished Thai artist whose work evolved around his faith in Buddhism.
During the 1990s, Boonma gained recognition as an innovative installation
artist. Includes charcoal sketches, soil drawings, perfume paintings, mixedmedia
works, brass sculptures and herbal installations.
The World of Buddhism: Selections from the Mr. and Mrs.
John D. Rockefeller 3rd Collection
Through December 14
Drawing on the rich holdings of Buddhist art in Asia Society's Rockefeller
Collection, this exhibition explores how Buddhism developed from its origins
as an austere philosophy into a complex religion with a large pantheon of
Buddhas and bodhisattvas (enlightened beings). A highlight of the exhibition
is a meditation room hung with Buddhist paintings (Note: the meditation
room closes on August 17).
