Water is more than a liquid that quenches thirst, nourishes all life, and shapes our planet. Water inspires the human spirit and the imagination. In various ways, all the world's religions recognize water's sacred importance. In some traditions, water itself is worshipped as a god. Others see a role for water in rituals of purification, or honor its life-giving powers. And in arts, both sacred and secular, water inspires expressions of reverence and celebration.

"Hail flood! emerging from the earth, arriving to bring Egypt to life. . ."
-Ancient Egyptian hymn to the Nile River flood

"All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again."
 --The Bible, Ecclesiastes 1:7
