This classroom activity gives students a close-up look at a deep sea vent community. Working in small groups, student can complete this Web investigation in a single class period. The printable six-page handout includes:
- A series of inquiry-based questions that prompt students to remember what they already know about deep sea vents and how you can tell if something is living.
- Detailed directions for a completing an interactive Web activity, in which they investigate a deep sea ecosystem, locate virtual samples, and classify these specimens as living or non-living.
- A worksheet that helps students take a careful look at the virtual samples, analyze the evidence given for each, and record their observations about the specimens and how they interact within this ecosystem.
