The original plan, to visit islands in the south of the archipelago, had to be nixed. When the team heads north next week, they’ll also go off the grid.
Ornithologist Brian Smith and colleagues are on a month-long Constantine S. Niarchos expedition to the Southwest Pacific.
The expedition team reaches their final camp and finds several uncommon species of birds as well as more snakes, skinks, geckos, lizards, frogs, and bats.
“That climb was so worth it!” writes herpetologist Chris Raxworthy. “Here we find one of the most beautiful bright green tree frogs I have yet found in PNG, and other species that do not seem to fit the species descriptions I have at camp.”
