Remaking True-to-Life Snow in the Lynx Diorama
by AMNH on
The dioramas in the Jill and Lewis Bernard Family Hall of North American Mammals have always been splendid, but after more than a year of painstaking restoration, they look better than ever. A multi-video series, now on amnh.tv and on the Museum's YouTube channel, documents their renovation.
In this post, the third in a series, we share one of the videos, which explores how Museum artists re-built the "snow" in the foreground of various dioramas including the Canada Lynx and Varying Hare diorama.
What creates the "glimmer" or "bling" in the diorama's snow? Find out the answer in the video, as Museum artist Joianne Bittle Knight explains the painstaking process of recreating freshly fallen snow.
For more images of the hall’s celebrated dioramas, behind-the-scenes videos, archival photos, and more, download the official Hall of North American Mammals app, for iOS or Android.
