Establish Prior Knowledge
Call on students to share what they know about the causes of wildfires. Discuss what negative and positive effects a wildfire might have on a wilderness area. Tell students that the Bio Snapshot they will see documents the destruction caused by deadly wildfires in Australia’s southern region.
Have students view the Snapshot and read the synopsis. Divide the class into groups to research and report on one of the following questions:
1. What causes wildfires? What conditions in Australia enabled the fires?
2. How do wildfires spread?
3. How does global warming create wildfire-prone conditions?
Have groups report to the class. Based on what they have learned, discuss with students whether or not they think wildfires in Australia will worsen due to global warming. Have students support their positions.
