National ArchivesIn the summer of 1871, geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden and his team thoroughly mapped, measured, sketched, and photographed Yellowstone's features for the first time. According to his letters, " portion of the West has been more carefully surveyed than the Yellow Stone basin." A year later, President Ulysses S. Grant established it as the first national park.
