National ArchivesIn the summer of 1871, geologist Ferdinand V. Hayden and his team thoroughly mapped, measured, sketched, and photographed Yellowstone's features for the first time. According to his letters, "...no portion of the West has been more carefully surveyed than the Yellow Stone basin." A year later, President Ulysses S. Grant established it as the first national park.
