Common Core Literacy & Science Standards: Mineral Formation and Properties

This one day workshop focuses on using the Guggenheim Hall of Minerals to understand the physical and chemical properties of minerals and investigate mineral forming environments. Teachers will experience pre, during and post field trip activities that embed science content in Common Core aligned reading and writing tasks. Discussions with colleagues will provide an opportunity for teachers to differentiate lessons for their students.
Teachers will receive copies of the Educator’s Guide as well as a set of resources that include, essays, videos, and a flash drive containing digital resources such as SMART board materials and images from the exhibits. In addition teachers will take home a volume of pre-instruction assessment probes from the Uncovering Student Ideas in Science series.
This workshop is for teachers of grades 6-12.

Participants will work with Museum educators and scientists to strengthen their understanding of the earth processes that cause natural disasters, explore the tools that scientists use to study and predict these events and use case studies that help illustrate the topic
NYC Teachers Chancellor’s Day Professional Development 2015: Using Museum Resources to Support K-12 Science Education

This professional day is geared for K-12 teachers who want to strengthen their ability to use Museum resources to teach science. Participants will have the opportunity to choose from a range of breakout sessions that will utilize the Museum’s digital, print, and exhibition resources to connect with the science curriculum in ways that are engaging for students.
