Exploring Climate Change - Winter 2013

Explore the science of climate change, and how scientists study climate and make predictions using modeling. This NASA-funded course will take place over three weeks, both online and onsite at AMNH, and will be co-taught by Museum educators and climate scientists.
In the online portion of the course, teachers will learn how the climate system works, what factors cause climate to change across different time scales, how those factors interact and how climate has changed in the past. At the Museum, we will use climate models and data to learn how scientists use models, observations, and theory to make predictions about future climate. These onsite activities will be directly applicable to the science classroom. Teachers will also receive textbooks, DVDs, and other classroom resources.
Through NASA grant support, AMNH will provide a $250 stipend to all teachers who successfully complete the course, including active participation in online discussions, completion of assignments and attendance at both on-site days. Participants are also required to complete two end-of-course surveys. This course is limited to secondary school science teachers (grades 6-12). Any teacher who can participate in the full program is welcome to apply, though some preference will be given to New York City teachers.
