Virtual Worlds Institute: What Happened to the Neanderthals? (Grades 6-8)
July 8, 2013 - July 19, 2013
The scene: Homo sapiens and Neanderthals are living side by side in Ice Age Europe. Were they friends or enemies? Did they speak to each other, mate with each other, or kill each other? Why did Neanderthals go extinct and leave humans as the only hominid species left on Earth? What happened to the Neanderthals?
In this fascinating institute, you will use fossil and genetic evidence to investigate these questions and bring competing scenarios to life using 3-D digital software, a photo-realistic virtual Ice Age Europe, and collections from the Sackler Educational Laboratory for Comparative Genomics and Human Origins. You will meet Museum scientists who will expose you to cutting-edge careers in the field of physical anthropology, and you will take behind-the-scenes tours of our research departments. In addition, the Virtual Worlds Institute will provide you with valuable information about AMNH's high school internships and research opportunities.
