Meet the experts that are participating in Milstein Science Series: Prehistoric Ocean Dwellers, and learn what it takes to be a paleontologist.
The AMNH Paleontology collections contain an estimated 4.75 million specimens. They are divided into four collection units: Fossil Amphibians, Reptiles, and Birds (FARB); Fossil Fish; Fossil Invertebrates; and Fossil Mammals.
Size is much more than just a matter of appearances. It affects nearly everything an animal does. Big animals eat more than small ones; small animals breathe faster than big ones, and big animals generally live much longer.
From the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life to the Hall of Vertebrate Origins, the Museum is a great place to learn about Sharks, often-misunderstood predators. Sharks began evolving about 450 million years ago. Of the roughly 340 living species some have changed little in the past 100 million years.
There are two ways to determine the age of a dinosaur fossil. One is called relative geologic time, which involves deciding whether one dinosaur fossil is older or younger than another. The other is often called absolute geologic time, which involves estimating how many millions of years old a dinosaur fossil is.
