Culture through the Lens - Exploratory Course

October 31, 2014 - December 12, 2014

Introduction to Anthropology IMage

The media feeds us millions of images every day. But few consumers take the time to decode these visual forms of information. Visual anthropology gives us the tools to “readjust” our eyes and examine the relationship between culture and visual representations. Our six-week course will be dedicated to exploring gender, race, and the individual through various visual media such as film, photography, and social media. Activities will include a trip through the Museum archives, critiques of films and popular travel magazines, analysis of sites like Facebook and Instagram, and the use of digital cameras to capture both photographs and film in an ethnographic setting.
