Bat flies are parasites that strictly feed on the blood of bats. These parasites have unique life cycles and traits that allow them to flourish both in dark, underground caves and on their flying bat hosts. By studying these interesting insects, Kelly Speer, Ph.D. candidate in the Richard Gilder Graduate School at the American Museum of Natural History, gains insight into the evolution of bats and the ecology of pathogens in this system. Join us as Kelly discusses her research on bat flies and bats, and shares specimens with us!

Meet the Scientist programs are for visitors 7 years old and older.
