Clearing and staining is a method of preparing skeletons that leaves flesh clear, bones red, and cartilage blue. This cleared and stained pancake batfish (Halieutichthys aculeatus)shows how bony this fish's skeleton is. This specimen was photographed on a light box to best highlight the extent of the staining.
