Eugene Gudger
E. W. Gudger (1866-1956), a North Carolina native of pioneer stock, transformed his early interest in fishing on Arkansas bayous into a devotion to ichthyology. He began working at the AMNH's ichthyology department in 1919 as a bibliographer and quickly rose through the ranks. His titles included Associate, Associate Curator and upon retirement in 1938, Honorary Associate of the Department of Living and Extinct Fishes. Gudger is seen here in 1906 with a Hammerhead Shark caught off Beaufort, N.C.
