A Christmas spider (Austracantha minax) weaves its web in shrubs along the highway east of Geraldton, Western Australia. The Christmas spider of Australia is an orb weaver (Family Araneidae). Orb weavers are an enormously diverse family of about 2,600 species. Some species are smaller than 2 mm and some large tropical species are capable of catching and dispatching small birds.
