A huge variety of spiders call leaf litter their home. Dr. Ovtsharenko spreads a small quantity of leaf litter on a white background to better see the spiders he will collect in New York City's Van Cortland Park. He then sucks the spiders into a collecting jar using a tool called an aspirator.
